Libya –The cities of Sorman and Al-Zawiya, west of Tripoli, witnessed armed clashes that resulted in deaths and injuries, coinciding with a mass escape of inmates from Sorman prison, the closure of the coastal road and the suspension of work in a number of facilities.
A security source in the Zawiya Security Directorate told Agence France-Presse that the confrontations, which broke out south of Sorman and parts of Zawiya, left4 dead and more than 10 woundedWhile Salem Bahr, a member of the notables and elders of Zawiya, reported that 3 civilians were killed and others injured, in the absence of a final official tally.
According to the security source, confrontations broke out between groups affiliated with the Anti-Security Threats Service and members of103rd Infantry Battalion. Both parties are affiliated with institutions affiliated with the Government of National Unity, as the agency is affiliated with the Presidency of the Government, while the battalion is affiliated with the Ministry of Defense.
There was no official comment from the Prime Minister’s Office or the Ministry of Defense, at a time when communications are being made to stop the fighting and prevent its expansion.
Circulating clips showed burning military vehicles and vehicles, along with columns of smoke, explosions, and shooting with medium and heavy weapons. The mayor of Sorman, Muhammad Abu Sneina, said that the humanitarian situation in the city was “very bad,” noting severe damage, before recording relative calm following the deployment of a neutral force.
Prisoners escape and the movement is suspended
In conjunction with the clashes, the Judicial Police announced the occurrence ofMass escape from Sorman prison, without specifying the number of escaped inmates.
The agency confirmed the opening of an investigation and the formation of a committee to account for the escapees and take the necessary legal measures, while circulating clips showed scenes of prisoners escaping in light of gunfire surrounding the prison.
The Red Crescent in Sorman raised the level of readiness, calling for the opening of safe humanitarian corridors to enable emergency teams to move.
The Sorman Municipality also called on residents to avoid going out unless necessary and to stay away from areas of clashes, and announced the suspension of work in its departments and facilities and that Tuesday was considered an exceptional holiday.
The authorities closed the coastal road linking Tripoli to Al-Zawiya, while the ambulance and emergency services in Al-Zawiya warned against using it due to the continued security risk.
Al-Zawiya refinery is under reserve
The repercussions of the confrontations extended to the oil sector, as Al-Zawiya Oil Refining Company called on its employees to stay away from the areas of clashes and the roads leading to them, and allowed workers in unsafe areas not to join the workplace.
