Morocco –An African migrant was killed on Friday after falling into the sea while trying to reach the occupied city of Ceuta from Morocco, using a parachute, according to what sources from the Spanish Civil Guard reported.
The incident occurred at approximately eight o’clock in the morning, near the Benzo checkpoint, after surveillance systems detected the attempt to cross, prompting the Spanish authorities to deploy members of its naval apparatus to intervene at the scene.
According to the same sources, the young man fell into the sea while trying to carry out the crossing, and Civil Guard patrols rushed to try to save him. Upon arrival, he was in a state of cardiorespiratory arrest. Resuscitation attempts were made, but they were not successful.
The victim’s body was transferred to the Naval Service base in the fishing port of Ceuta, where it was placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities to complete legal procedures and conduct a medical autopsy.
The Spanish authorities opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident and determine the circumstances of the crossing attempt, which ended in the death of the migrant.
This incident comes in the context of the escalation of attempts to reach Ceuta from the Moroccan coast, which, according to data from the Spanish authorities, resulted in the recovery of the bodies of dozens of people during the recent period.
On Friday, the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ceuta announced that it had received the bodies of 80 people who died at sea while trying to reach the city, while 79 autopsies were performed, while searches for potential victims continued.
The authorities reported that the identities of two victims were determined using fingerprints, while six other bodies were subject to identification procedures based on biological analyzes and DNA comparison with members of the victims’ families.
The Spanish authorities are continuing search and investigation operations, in coordination with the competent authorities, with the aim of identifying the remaining victims and revealing the circumstances of the crossing attempts that claimed the lives of dozens of migrants.
