The US Congress is tightening its noose on Polisario… The proposal to designate a terrorist organization is gaining increasing support

Algeria –A US bill seeking to classify the Polisario Front on the list of foreign terrorist organizations continues to gain increasing political support in the US Congress, after Texas Democratic Representative Mark Veasey joined the list of supporters of the legislative initiative known as the “Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act” (H.R. 4119).

The draft law requires the US State Department to begin studying the legal procedures for including the Polisario Front on the list of foreign terrorist organizations, in a step that reflects the widening circle of support for the proposal within the Republican and Democratic parties.

The joining of Mark Veasey, one of the most prominent names within the Democratic Party in Texas, is a remarkable development in the course of the project, which had previously received the support of Democratic Representative Jimmy Panetta, along with a number of Republican representatives interested in security, defense, and foreign policy issues.

Thus, the number of official supporters of the proposal in the US House of Representatives rises to 14, amid indications of growing interest in this file within American legislative circles.

A number of the project’s supporters rely on reports and security data that talk about alleged links between the Polisario Front and regional networks active in the Sahel and North Africa, in addition to accusations related to relations with regional and international parties that are being monitored by American departments concerned with security and defense.

In parallel, the US Senate continues to discuss a similar project presented by a number of its members, which strengthens the political momentum surrounding the initiative within the US legislative institution.

If the legal and legislative path of the proposal is completed, the US State Department will be required to study the file in accordance with the applicable procedures before making any official decision regarding it.

This development comes in the context of escalating debate within the United States about the security challenges in the Sahel region and North Africa, and the role played by armed organizations and cross-border threat networks in destabilizing regional stability.
