Tripoli –The United Nations Support Mission in Libya expressed its concern about the escalation of inflammatory rhetoric and misinformation circulating on social media platforms, targeting irregular migrants in the country, warning of its repercussions on societal stability and public security.
The UN mission said, in a statement published on its official page, that the spread of inaccurate news and inflammatory speeches would inflame tensions and deepen feelings of discrimination and lack of trust, which could negatively reflect on the lives and safety of individuals in various Libyan regions.
This position comes after the circulation of posts on social media claiming the existence of plans to settle irregular migrants inside Libya, allegations regarding which no official confirmations have been issued by the Libyan authorities or UN agencies.
Digital platforms also witnessed calls for the expulsion of irregular migrants and the closure of the headquarters of the International Organization for Migration in the capital, Tripoli, which prompted the United Nations to call for accuracy and reliance on official sources before circulating information.
The UN mission affirmed its commitment to continuing cooperation with national and local authorities, civil society organizations and the media in order to enhance access to reliable information and combat fake news and hate speech.
In the same context, the United Nations called on various parties to avoid any speech that might incite discrimination or violence, stressing the importance of responsible communication and constructive dialogue in light of the political, economic and social challenges facing Libya.
These developments coincided with official Libyan positions rejecting any trend towards settling irregular migrants, as a number of Libyan officials, including the President of the Supreme Council of State, Mohamed Takala, and the Vice-President of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, affirmed their adherence to what they described as the national constants related to this file.
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity confirmed its follow-up to the ongoing debate on irregular migration, calling for not to be led by rumors or inflammatory calls, while emphasizing respect for the headquarters of international organizations and foreign missions operating in the country.
For years, Libya has been facing increasing challenges related to the issue of irregular migration, by virtue of its position as one of the most prominent transit routes to Europe, in light of the continuation of migrant smuggling networks and their exploitation of the state of political and security division that the country is witnessing.
