Rabat –There are increasing indications that the National Rally of Liberals is moving towards the opposition, in light of the ongoing consultations regarding the formation of the new government majority following the legislative elections of September 23, 2026, the results of which are led by the Authenticity and Modernity Party with 97 seats, followed by the National Rally of Liberals with 66 seats and the Istiqlal Party with 65 seats, according to the official results announced.
Circulating data, citing informed sources, indicate that the current arrangements to form a majority may move towards an alliance that includes parties from the Democratic Bloc, along with other political formations, which may put the party that led the outgoing government in front of the option of working from the position of the opposition, waiting for the final formula of the new majority to become clear.
According to informed sources, the transition to the opposition is seen as a normal political possibility that falls within the principle of alternating power, although the bet was on continuing to participate in the government and contributing to the download of open offices.
The same sources added that the next stage will put the party to the test of proving its ability to operate from the position of the opposition and adapt to the transformations brought about by the results of the recent elections, noting that the new faces who have joined the parliamentary team are prepared for various political scenarios.
Regarding the possibility of supporting the next government from outside its majority, through the formula of cash support, the sources ruled out this option, considering that the party prefers clarity in its political position between participating in the majority or aligning itself with the opposition.
This potential shift comes after the decline of the representation of the National Rally of Independents in the House of Representatives to 66 seats in the September 2026 elections, compared to 102 seats during the 2021 elections, meaning a loss of 36 seats, according to the official results.
During the past years, the party participated in managing major government sectors, including the economy, finance, and agriculture, and it also maintained a continuous presence in successive governments. His move to the opposition, if confirmed within the final version of the next majority, would redraw his position within the legislative institution and determine the nature of his relationship with the new government.
To the extent of the available data, the party’s orientation towards the opposition remains linked to the outcome of the majority formation consultations, and it cannot be considered a final decision before the issuance of official positions clarifying its position in the next political stage.
