Tunisia –The Mufti of the Tunisian Republic, Hisham Ben Mahmoud, confirmed that performing the ritual of sacrifice on Eid al-Adha remains linked to ability and financial ability, stressing that people whose financial circumstances do not allow them to purchase the sacrifice “do not bear any sin according to Islamic law.”
The Mufti explained, in media statements, that Islamic law is based on facilitation and removing embarrassment from people, adding that a Muslim is not required to resort to borrowing or burden himself with expenses beyond his means in order to purchase the Eid sacrifice, especially in light of the difficult economic conditions facing many families.
He pointed out that “the Islamic religion is a religion of ease and mercy,” and that legal duties remain linked to a person’s ability and ability, considering that whoever is unable to perform this ritual due to a difficult situation does not bear any guilt.
In another context, the Mufti of Tunisia touched on the status of women within society, stressing that the marginalization or exclusion of women from public life is directly linked to the backwardness of societies, as he put it.
He considered that women represent “the foundation and school within Islamic society,” citing the biography of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and the way he dealt with his wives, stressing the need to respect women and enhance their presence within society.
The Tunisian Mufti added that he adopts an open vision in this aspect, considering that the renaissance of societies passes through empowering women and involving them in various areas of life.
During the past year, Hisham bin Mahmoud had previously interacted with the debate related to the calls demanding the abolition of the ritual of sacrifice in order to preserve livestock in Tunisia, where he affirmed at the time that the sacrifice remains an existing religious ritual for those who are able to do it, without burdening those who are unable beyond their capacity.
