Algeria –The Moroccan Sahara file returned to the forefront of discussions during the annual regional symposium of the 24th Committee of the United Nations held in Nicaragua, after official interventions that once again highlighted the positions of the parties concerned with the conflict.
The symposium witnessed an intervention by the Algerian delegation that included renewed support for the thesis of self-determination and criticism of the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco as a political solution to the conflict, an initiative that in recent years has enjoyed increasing support from a number of influential countries within the international community.
This discussion comes in the context of developments in the file within the United Nations, especially after the Security Council adopted successive resolutions calling for a realistic, practical, sustainable political solution based on consensus between the parties.
On the other hand, the Moroccan intervention before the committee confirmed the growing international support for the autonomy initiative, noting the expanding circle of countries supporting the Moroccan proposal at the African, Arab and international levels.
A discussion also emerged during the symposium related to the future of handling the issue within the United Nations structures, in light of opinions that consider that the issue has moved from the logic of decolonization to the search for a realistic political settlement under the auspices of the United Nations.
Observers believe that the recent diplomatic developments reflect the continued political competition over the issue within international forums, coinciding with rapid shifts in the positions of a number of countries towards the conflict.
The Moroccan Sahara file remains one of the most prominent issues on the regional and international agenda, at a time when international efforts continue to find a political solution acceptable to the parties concerned.
