Al Hoceima –Over the past two days, the strong water flows of Wadi Ghais contributed to the revitalization of the Ghais Dam in Al Hoceima Province, following the heavy thunderstorms that the region witnessed, at a time when the completion of this strategic water facility exceeded 99 percent, according to data received regarding the project.
This improvement in water imports came after the rains that Al Hoceima, Imzouren and the surrounding mountainous regions witnessed since Wednesday night, which increased the flow of the valley, which flows directly into the dam lake, located about 43 kilometers southwest of the city of Al Hoceima.
The total storage capacity of the dam is about 93 million cubic metres, while the cost of its completion has been approximately 1.38 billion dirhams, since the start of works in mid-2017. The project aims to enhance water security in the region and ensure the supply of drinking water to the population in the medium and long term.
The facility’s functions are not limited to providing water resources, as it is expected to also contribute to reducing the risk of flooding in areas and facilities located at the bottom of the valley, in addition to providing irrigation water for about 1,320 hectares of agricultural land.
In parallel with the recovery witnessed by the dam, the works have reached their final stages, with progress exceeding 99 percent recorded, and the project completion period reduced by about nine months, according to the data provided regarding the workshops.
The Ghais Dam is part of the water projects aimed at enhancing the storage capabilities and management of water resources in the Kingdom, in the context of national efforts aimed at confronting the challenges of water stress and improving the supply of potable and irrigation water.
