Tripoli –The oil facilities in the city of Zawiya, western Libya, entered a state of security alert after armed confrontations broke out near the Zawiya oil complex, which prompted the authorities to suspend activities inside the second largest oil refinery in the country as a precautionary measure to protect the facilities and workers.
The National Oil Corporation reported that the bombing that affected the vicinity of the refinery caused material damage to a number of equipment, including tanks designated for fuel and materials related to aviation supply, which required the evacuation of oil tankers from the port and the temporary suspension of operations.
Despite the security developments, the corporation confirmed that operations to supply the local market with fuel have not witnessed any disturbances so far, explaining that alternative plans have been activated to secure supplies based on the stocks of other cities, including Misrata.
The Zawiya refinery is of strategic importance within the Libyan energy system, due to its direct connection to the Sharara oil field, one of the largest producing fields in the country, in addition to its role in refining crude oil and providing a number of basic oil derivatives to the internal market.
On the other hand, Al-Zawiya Oil Refining Company declared a state of extreme emergency, beginning the evacuation of workers and suspending various activities within the oil complex, in conjunction with continuing security tensions near neighboring residential areas.
These developments have raised increasing concerns about the impact of security unrest on the Libyan energy sector, especially in light of the national economy’s heavy dependence on oil exports as a main source of public revenues and foreign currencies.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya also warned of the repercussions of the escalation on vital infrastructure and the local economy, calling for avoiding any actions that might threaten strategic oil installations.
