صحافة بلادي — Geneva –The team supporting the role of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees called for informing the residents of the Tindouf camps about the various options available to them to reach sustainable solutions, in light of Security Council Resolution No. 2797 and the diplomatic developments that followed it.
This call came Thursday during the 77th annual session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, where the team stressed the need to take practical steps to enable camp residents to learn about the options available to them, and to create conditions that allow them to reach a more dignified future.
The group’s statement quoted Todd Stegerda, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations in Geneva, as saying that Security Council Resolution No. 2797 of 2025 and subsequent diplomatic developments have provided, according to the group’s assessment, a real opportunity for camp residents to benefit from sustainable solutions that were not available to the same extent previously. The statement came in a declaration drafted in cooperation with France.
The group called on the High Commissioner and donor countries to take measures to inform the residents of the Tindouf camps about various possible options, stressing the importance of providing appropriate conditions to enable them to make decisions about their future.
The group also noted the efforts of the High Commissioner for Refugees, Barham Salih, in making protracted displacement situations a priority within the work of the Commission, considering that ending long-term displacement situations represents an essential element to ensure the sustainability of the humanitarian efforts made by the United Nations organization.
In the same context, the group urged the Commission to address the root causes of forced displacement, in accordance with its mandate, and to take advantage of the available opportunities to contribute to political paths and peace and development initiatives that could lead to sustainable solutions.
She stressed, according to the statements contained in the communication, the importance of providing technical expertise in the field of protection, and mobilizing the efforts of states and actors in the fields of peace and development, with the aim of developing solutions that respond to the different specificities of each case.
This call intersects with the position expressed by Morocco on Tuesday, with the support of an important number of member states of the Commission’s Executive Committee, when it called on the leadership of the Commission and donor countries to redirect efforts towards financing sustainable solutions for the residents of the Tindouf camps.
This approach, according to the Moroccan position contained in published data, includes voluntary return to the homeland, integration into the host country, or resettlement in third countries, on the basis of the free and voluntary choice of the persons concerned.
These calls return the issue of sustainable solutions for the residents of the Tindouf camps to the forefront of discussion within UN institutions, with a focus on the role of UNHCR and donor countries in providing the information, protection, and necessary conditions for the population to make their choices about the future.
