Reuters: Pakistan mediates between the two sides of the Libyan crisis, with Saudi support

LibyaReuters revealed, on Monday, citing two Pakistani sources, that Islamabad has begun mediation efforts between the two competing authorities in Libya, as part of efforts aimed at bringing the views closer between the administration based in the east of the country and its counterpart in the West.

According to the two sources, this initiative was launched late last year, at the request of the two Libyan parties, which expressed their desire to involve Pakistan in mediation efforts. The nature of coordination between Islamabad and the rest of the regional and international parties involved in the Libyan file is not yet clear.

The two sources added that these endeavors enjoy support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which had signed a joint defense agreement with Pakistan last year, giving the initiative an additional regional dimension.

Reuters believes that the success of this mediation, if achieved, may enhance Pakistan’s diplomatic presence on the international scene, especially after the role it played this year in mediating between the United States and Iran, a role that received repeated praise from the administration of US President Donald Trump.

One of the sources indicated that the United States is fully informed of Pakistani movements related to the Libyan crisis.

These moves come at a time when international efforts continue to find a political settlement to the Libyan crisis, which has been experiencing an institutional division between two competing governments for years, following the events that followed the 2011 uprising and the fall of the regime of the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
