Tripoli –The Department issuedLibyan customsA decision to stopHead of Customs at Tripoli Sea Port, BrigadierIzz al-Din al-FandiHe was suspended from work, and a committee was formed to investigate him, following statements that sparked controversy regarding the storage conditions of seized goods inside the port.
According to data published by the Sada Economic newspaper, the decision was based on an official correspondence issued by the Minister of State to the Council of Ministers, in implementation of the instructions of the National Unity Government, after a video clip was circulated in which Al-Fandi appeared speaking about the conditions of the seized warehouses and what he described as imbalances in the storage mechanisms.
On the other hand, a spokesman for the Customs Authority explained,Fahmy Al-MaqouriThe warehouse that appeared in the video contains food and pharmaceutical goods and other goods for which non-conformity decisions have been issued by the competent authorities, including the Food and Drug Control Center and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Al-Maqouri confirmed that these goods are not put on the Libyan market, but are kept temporarily until the legal procedures for their destruction are completed, noting that Libyan law obligates importing companies to bear the costs of the destruction process.
He added that a specialized committee is responsible for destroying these goods periodically, but some companies did not complete the required procedures, which led to the accumulation of quantities of goods inside the warehouses.
The Customs Authority stressed that the goal of storing these goods is to prevent their leakage into local markets, stressing that the warehouse is designated for goods against which destruction orders have been issued and not for storing tradable goods.
These developments come at a time when the issue has sparked widespread interaction within Libya, amid demands to consolidate the principles of transparency and enhance oversight of customs facilities and mechanisms for disposing of seized goods.
