Rabat –Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch announced Morocco’s return to adopting the Kingdom’s legal clock (Greenwich Mean Time), with the end of additional time (Greenwich Mean Time +1), starting on September 20, 2026, in a decision that comes after years of adopting the additional clock almost permanently.
Akhannouch explained that the decision came in response to the demands of citizens and after discussions and consultations within the components of the government majority, noting that the issue of the extra hour remained among the issues that sparked widespread debate within Moroccan society.
The Prime Minister stressed that the return to Greenwich Mean Time aims to respond to the expectations of citizens and interact with concerns related to the impact of the additional time on daily life, study and work, explaining that the decision was taken after evaluating the effects of the time system in place over the past years.
This decision represents an important shift in the timing policy in the Kingdom, as it puts an end to the almost permanent use of GMT +1, which has sparked widespread controversy since its adoption, with the new legal time being implemented at the end of summer 2026.
