The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Morocco, is moving steadily towards establishing itself as one of the most successful tournaments in the history of the competition, in light of strong indicators at the level of organization and infrastructure, in addition to an unprecedented public turnout compared to previous editions.
From the starting whistle, the peculiarity of this edition became apparent as it was the first to be organized in nine stadiums distributed over six cities, most of which were modern facilities that had been completed or rehabilitated according to international standards, which gave the tournament a new logistical and organizational dimension within the African continent.
In terms of public attendance, the Moroccan national team’s matches topped the list of matches that attracted the most fans during the group stage, as the number of spectators in its three matches exceeded 186,000 followers, which reflects the great popular momentum that accompanied the participation of the “Atlas Lions.”
Other matches also witnessed a remarkable attendance, including matches against prominent African teams, where the number of fans in some matches exceeded the threshold of 40,000 spectators, while other matches recorded numbers that approached or exceeded 30,000 followers, which strengthened the public character of the tournament since its first rounds.
Adrar Stadium in Agadir recorded record attendance during some matches, especially the matches played by the Egyptian team, contrary to prior expectations that suggested an average turnout at this stadium during the first round.
Iqbal is a candidate to rise in the decisive roles
With the transition to the knockout rounds, official indicators show that tickets for a number of anticipated matches have been sold out, which heralds an additional increase in attendance during the final rounds, especially with the decisive matches being concentrated in major stadiums in Rabat, Tangier, Marrakesh and Agadir.
Observers believe that allocating one stadium for each match, instead of programming more than one match on the same day in the same stadium, contributed to the accuracy of calculating the real numbers of fans, which was reflected in the numbers recorded since the group stage.
Candidate numbers for history
According to specialized analyzes of sports data, the total number of spectators during the tournament is expected to range between 1.4 and 1.5 million people, noting that organizing the competition during the winter prevented reaching higher numbers that would have been possible if it was held in the summer, given the large capacity of Moroccan stadiums.
These analyzes agree that the offer provided by the sports infrastructure in Morocco exceeds what was presented in the last continental editions, whether in terms of the number of seats, the distribution of stadiums, and the quality of organization.
Crowd diversity reflects the identity of the tournament
In addition to the numbers, the diverse presence of fans of the participating African teams added a distinctive cultural character to the tournament, as the Moroccan host cities turned into interactive spaces that brought together fans from various parts of the continent, in an atmosphere characterized by enthusiasm and discipline.
It is noteworthy that the group stage, which concluded a few days ago, witnessed 36 matches during which 87 goals were scored, an indication of a high competitive level that enhanced the attractiveness of this edition at the continental and international levels.
