Libya –Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, Chief of the General Staff of the forces affiliated with the General Command in Eastern Libya, arrived in Morocco on Sunday, October 11, on an official visit that extends until October 15, according to data reported by Libyan media, in the absence of an official Moroccan announcement regarding the details of the visit’s program and its objectives.
The Libyan military official was received by Major General Murad Al-Munir, Deputy Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces, in the presence of Moroccan officials and military leaders, according to photos published by the Military Information Division of the General Command of the Armed Forces in eastern Libya on its Facebook page.
Within the limits of published data, the nature of the meetings scheduled during this visit was not revealed, nor were the files that will be put on the negotiating table, pending official clarifications from the relevant authorities in Morocco and Libya.
Khaled Haftar’s visit comes as an extension of previous military contacts between the two sides, as he previously met Lieutenant General Mohamed Bariz, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces, last July, on the sidelines of a military conference hosted by the Angolan capital, Luanda.
Khaled Haftar has been chief of the General Staff of the forces affiliated with the General Command in eastern Libya since August 2025, in the context of the continuing political and military division that the country is experiencing between authorities and institutions based in the east and others in the west.
This military move also recalls the role played by Morocco in the efforts to reach a political settlement of the Libyan crisis, through the city of Skhirat hosting in 2015 the rounds of dialogue that led to the signing of the Libyan Political Agreement, in addition to subsequent initiatives and meetings aimed at bringing the views of the Libyan parties closer together.
The nature of the potential outcomes of the visit remains unannounced yet, awaiting what official authorities may reveal regarding the schedule of meetings and files included in the discussions.
