Algeria – My Press
A statement by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune about adopting a “political solution” in the Sahara issue sparked debate in political and media circles, especially because it came without mentioning the option of a referendum, which was the focus of Algerian discourse in previous stages.
According to media data, this statement came during discussions between Tebboune and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, where the importance of reaching a political settlement within the framework of international legitimacy was emphasized, with a call to resume dialogue between the parties concerned.
This development is seen, according to observers, as an indication of a relative change in the Algerian official discourse, in light of the transformations witnessed in the process of settling the conflict, especially after the issuance of UN Security Council resolutions that emphasize the political solution as a realistic and agreed-upon option.
In the same context, the United Nations, through its Secretary-General and his personal envoy to the Sahara, continues its efforts to relaunch the political track, by encouraging the resumption of negotiations between the parties concerned, within the framework of an approach based on dialogue and consensus.
These developments come in light of increasing international support for political solutions, as the proposed settlement initiatives are considered a basis for discussion within the international community, with an emphasis on the necessity of finding a permanent solution that guarantees stability in the region.
Observers believe that the next stage may witness a new dynamic in this file, if these statements are translated into practical steps that strengthen the path of dialogue and push towards a political settlement of the conflict.
