Nouakchott –The Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Oil, Mohamed Ould Khaled, confirmed that the plan adopted by the sector since the beginning of the fuel crisis made it possible to ensure the regular supply of petroleum products to the market, noting that import, storage and distribution operations are carried out according to precise programming and continuous monitoring to ensure the stability of supplies.
The minister explained, during the press conference that followed the Cabinet meeting, that the state imports a ship of gasoline every 25 days, and its cargo is unloaded in warehouses in the city of Nouadhibou before distributing it to various parts of the country.
He added that the shortage recorded this month was due to the rejection of a shipment that did not meet quality standards, which prompted the authorities to oblige the supplier to provide an alternative shipment that arrived on July 17, while giving priority to supplying the traditional fishing sector with fuel coinciding with the start of the season.
The Minister also reviewed projects to expand fuel storage capabilities, stressing that the country’s storage capacity will increase from 242 thousand cubic meters to 462 thousand cubic meters after the completion of ongoing projects, within the framework of enhancing energy security.
Regarding the file of the new storage warehouses, he explained that the damage caused to some facilities is not borne by the government, because they are still in the process of being completed and have not been officially received, stressing that the implementing company will bear responsibility, with the fines stipulated in the contract being applied in the event of delay.
Although the minister confirmed that the market remained regularly supplied, his statements raised questions among observers, especially since Mauritania witnessed in recent weeks a crisis in the availability of fuel, which was reflected in fuel stations in a number of regions. His talk about importing a shipment of gasoline every 25 days opens the door to discussion about the adequacy of this rhythm to meet national demand, and about the reasons for the emergence of bottlenecks in the supply of fuel if the supply plan is proceeding, according to the ministry, on a regular basis.
Public opinion is awaiting whether the measures announced by the government, in addition to storage expansion projects, will contribute to avoiding a recurrence of fuel crises and ensuring stable supplies during the coming periods.
