Mauritania.. The file of those not registered in the civil status returns to Parliament amid the controversy over identity and citizenship

Nouakchott –The file of citizens who are not registered in the biometric civil status system has returned to the forefront of political debate in Mauritania, after a parliamentary session was devoted to questioning the Minister of the Interior and the Promotion of Decentralization and Local Development about the measures taken to address this file, which raises an ongoing debate regarding identity and citizenship.

Parliamentary accountability came at the initiative of Representative Kadiata Malik Jallow, who raised the problems that a number of citizens still face in obtaining their civil documents and integrating into the National Population Register.

This file is considered one of the most sensitive issues in Mauritania in recent years, due to its connection to citizenship rights and access to basic services, in addition to its overlap with issues of identity and national belonging in a country characterized by its social and cultural diversity.

During the session, the Minister of the Interior confirmed that the government has adopted a new mechanism to address the outstanding issues, by creating 238 local committees distributed across the country’s various municipalities, which are responsible for studying registration requests and verifying data related to citizens’ civil IDs.

The government official explained that these committees enabled the registration of more than 36 thousand citizens in less than a year, considering that the recorded results reflect the effectiveness of the new approach and its ability to settle an important number of files that have remained pending for years.

The Minister pointed out that registration in the civil status has become a permanent service open to citizens who meet the legal requirements, instead of being limited to exceptional and time-bound campaigns as was the case previously.

On the other hand, human rights activists and opposition parties believe that the issue still requires further efforts to speed up the processing of pending requests and ensure that all citizens obtain civil documents that entitle them to benefit from their constitutional rights and basic administrative services.

The continued debate on this file reflects the existing challenge between the requirements of protecting the National Population Register and ensuring the accuracy of civil data, and the necessity of empowering all citizens with their right to register and obtain official documents.

Despite the numbers provided by the government regarding the settlement of thousands of files, the re-presentation of the issue in Parliament confirms that the file of those not registered in the civil status is still among the most prominent issues raised on the political and legal scene in Mauritania.
