Mauritania –Mauritania reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at finding a compatible political settlement for the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, stressing that its approach is based on encouraging dialogue and strengthening the international path to ensure security and stability in the region.
During a media meeting, the official spokesman for the Mauritanian government explained that his country’s position has not changed, and is based on supporting all initiatives sponsored by the United Nations in order to push towards a peaceful solution that takes into account the interests of the parties concerned and contributes to alleviating regional tension.
This position comes in the context of a renewed diplomatic movement led by the United Nations, with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, and the Polisario Front, as political consultations continue under the supervision of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and with the support of the United States of America.
In this context, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations stated that the meetings held in Washington, DC, on February 23 and 24, witnessed in-depth discussions, which he described as “encouraging,” while emphasizing that the settlement path still requires additional work and political responsibility from the various parties.
The discussions centered, according to the same source, on ways to revive the political process, based on the initiatives presented, most notably the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco, which a number of international actors consider a serious and realistic basis for reaching a lasting and agreed-upon solution.
Morocco continually affirms its commitment to the international path, highlighting that the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty represents a practical framework that balances preserving the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and providing expanded democratic management for the southern regions, ensuring development and stability.
On the other hand, observers believe that the continuation of some parties in adopting rigid approaches does not keep pace with regional and international transformations, and delays the chances of building an integrated Maghreb space based on cooperation instead of tension.
