Nouakchott –Data from the National Agency for Statistics and Demographic and Economic Analysis in Mauritania showed a noticeable increase in the prices of local products during the month of June 2026, driven by an increase in food prices, especially fish and red meat, which led to escalating inflationary pressures in the country.
The agency explained, in its monthly bulletin on the National Consumer Price Index, that the prices of local products rose by 1% during the month of June compared to the previous month, bringing the associated inflation rate to 4.8% during the past twelve months, and 10.2% on an annual basis.
On the other hand, the prices of imported products recorded a slight decline of 0.1% during June, despite the associated inflation rate reaching 3.9% within a year and 7.7% on an annual basis.
The data showed that fish prices witnessed the largest increases, after rising by 64.1% on an annual basis, while red meat prices rose by 27.6%, which directly contributed to the rise in local food prices.
Fresh produce prices also increased by 10% over the past 12 months, while energy sector inflation reached 10% year-on-year.
The report indicated that core inflation, which excludes the prices of fresh goods and energy, reached 3.8% over the past twelve months and 7.4% on an annual basis.
The agency confirmed that the continued rise in the prices of local products, especially foodstuffs, was one of the most prominent factors that pushed the general consumer price index to rise by 9.2% on an annual basis during June 2026.
