Mauritania grants the first satellite communications licenses to local and international companies

NouakchottThe Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in Mauritania announced the interim results of the first national tender to grant licenses for satellite communications services, in a step that represents a qualitative shift in the communications sector, after nearly three decades of almost complete reliance on traditional mobile phone networks.

The authority explained, in an official statement, that the tender included granting licenses to provide servicesPersonal Mobile Communications via Satellite (GMPCS)In addition to licenses to sell and market space capacities, after completing the evaluation of the technical and financial offers submitted by competing companies.

The tender, which was launched onJanuary 22, 2026, received remarkable interest from companies operating in the sector, as they acquired13 companiesThe tolerances booklet, as presented above9 companiesWith official offers distributed across the two categories of licenses.

The companyBrainSATSouth Africa, in partnership withSpace42Emirates, the financial ranking in the two categories, after submitting an offer worth800 thousand dollarsTo obtain a license for personal communications services via satellite, in addition to3 million dollarsFor the category specializing in selling and marketing space capacities.

In the first category, the companyVMDMauritania ranked second, followed byGuimi Multi ServicesWhile the offer ofwas excluded WigoAffiliated to thegroup Axian TelecomBecause it did not meet the tender conditions.

The regulatory authority confirmed that if either company refuses to amend its financial offer, the license will be granted to the next company in the tender order according to the final results.
