Nouakchott –The Mauritanian Foreign Minister confirmed,Mohamed Salem Ould MarzoukHis country has suffered human losses on its border with Mali in recent years, pointing to the fall of“Innocent souls”As a result of repeated security incidents, and once again calling for strengthening bilateral coordination to address common security challenges.
Ould Marzouk explained, in an interview with the French magazine “Jeune Afrique”, that Mauritania proposed establishing a joint coordination committee that includesMinisters of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Interior, and security services officialsIn the two countries, with the aim of addressing security issues along the border, but this initiative has not been activated from the financial side yet, without explaining the reasons for this.
The minister stressed that Nouakchott is still open to activating this proposal, considering that the presence of a direct coordination mechanism would have reduced losses on the Mauritanian-Mali border, which extends more than 2,200 kilometers.
Ould Marzouk stressed that Mauritania’s security is linked to the stability of neighboring countries, led by Mali, Senegal, Morocco and Algeria, stressing that regional cooperation has become a necessity to confront security and development challenges, in addition to the repercussions of climate change.
He pointed out that his country is conducting consultations with a number of African countries to launch a broader regional cooperation mechanism, pointing out that a conference that was scheduled to be held in Nouakchott in this regard was postponed due to international developments.
In a related context, the Minister explained that combating terrorism requires collective cooperation, considering that any country alone will not be able to resolve the confrontation with extremist organizations, especially since the Sahel region is witnessing a high rate of terrorist attacks at the global level.
Regarding the accusations made by the head of the transitional phase in Mali, Assimi Goita, that Mauritania is harboring elements of the “Front de Liberation de Azawad”, Ould Marzouk denied the validity of these allegations, stressing that the stability of Mali represents a direct strategic interest for his country, and that Mauritania cannot be a party to any action that threatens the security of its neighbour.
The Mauritanian Foreign Minister also touched on relations with France, explaining that the visit of President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Ghazouani to Paris contributed to strengthening the partnership between the two countries, especially in the areas of food security, energy, education and vocational training.
Regarding the immigration file, he stressed that Mauritania is adopting a balanced policy based on combating migrant smuggling networks while respecting humanitarian aspects, rejecting at the same time that his country should turn into a “border guard” for the benefit of Europe or into a platform for establishing European centers for migration management.
