Mauritania –Mauritania witnessed a new adjustment in fuel prices, which represented an increase in the price of diesel (gasoline) in exchange for a reduction in the price of gasoline, in a move that the authorities say falls within the policy of reorganizing energy subsidies to keep pace with the continuing fluctuations in global markets.
According to data provided by media reports, the National Fuel Committee announced the start of work on the new pricing after issuing a decision setting the maximum ceiling for the selling prices of petroleum derivatives, while canceling previous relevant decisions.
According to the same sources, the price of gasoline recorded an increase by about 23 old ounces, while the price of gasoline was reduced by between 26 and 27 old ounces for the second month in a row, within the framework of a pricing mechanism that adopts a specific ceiling for increases that does not exceed 5 percent.
In the capital, Nouakchott, the price of a liter of gasoline reached about 51.12 ounces, while the price of a liter of diesel reached about 51.23 ounces, with prices varying in some interior areas depending on transportation and distribution costs.
Media reports reported that the announcement of the increase in the price of gasoline prompted a large number of car owners to go to gas stations before the decision took effect, which led to noticeable crowding and long queues at some stations, in addition to a temporary halt to sales in some of them due to the exhaustion of available quantities.
For its part, the Mauritanian Ministry of Energy and Oil explained that the review of diesel prices is linked to fluctuations in the global oil market, stressing that the new pricing mechanism aims to limit the impact of sharp increases in international prices on the local consumer, while ensuring benefit from any potential decline in energy prices.
These developments raise questions about the stability of supplying the Mauritanian market with fuel in light of increasing local demand and fluctuations in global energy markets.
