Life imprisonment for Rached Ghannouchi in a terrorism case and heavy sentences for prominent leaders of the Ennahda movement

Tunisia –On Tuesday, a Tunisian court issued prison sentences ranging from ten years to life imprisonment against a number of Ennahda movement leaders, including the movement’s leader, Rached Ghannouchi, in a case related to terrorism-related charges.

According to what was reported by Tunisian media and confirmed by the Ennahda Movement, Rashid Ghannouchi, 84 years old, was convicted of life imprisonment plus an additional 30 years in prison, while former military officer Kamal Ben Badawi was sentenced to life imprisonment with an additional 32 years.

The court also sentenced former Tunisian Prime Minister Ali Al-Arayedh to 42 years in prison, who has been detained since 2022, and who is also being pursued in another file related to cases related to extremism.

Ghannouchi and a number of leaders of the Ennahda movement were accused of establishing what the Tunisian authorities described as a “secret security apparatus” affiliated with the movement, which dominated the political scene in Tunisia for years after the 2011 revolution.

Rashid Ghannouchi was arrested in 2023, while other judicial rulings had previously been issued against him, totaling more than 40 years in prison, including cases related to “conspiracy against state security,” according to what the Tunisian authorities announced.

Following the issuance of the latest ruling, Ghannouchi considered that his trial “lacked the most basic conditions of justice,” according to what was reported by local media.

These rulings come in an ongoing political context since the exceptional measures announced by Tunisian President Kais Saied on July 25, 2021, under which he assumed broad powers, amid criticism from opposition parties and civil organizations speaking about the decline in the conditions of rights and freedoms in the country.
