“Jeune Afrique” magazine: Tunisia is experiencing a state of political and economic stagnation amid internal anticipation

Jeune Afrique magazine monitored what it described as a state of “recession” that Tunisia is experiencing at the current stage, considering that the general scene is characterized by a slow pace of reforms and a decline in political activity, in light of the concentration of powers in the hands of President Kais Saied since the summer of 2021.

The magazine pointed out that previous promises to make a government amendment have not been implemented up to now, in parallel with the faltering of a number of major projects, in addition to challenges related to the economic and social conditions. It quoted citizens and observers talking about a general climate characterized by caution and a decline in public debate, in light of a feeling of frustration among segments of society.

On the economic level, the report cited figures issued by the National Institute of Statistics indicating a growth rate of around 2.5% during the year 2025, compared to an unemployment rate of approximately 16%, which some observers considered an indication of continuing difficulties in the labor market and the growth not being adequately reflected in the creation of job opportunities.

The magazine also discussed the impact of the political transformations that followed the decisions of July 2021, considering that the redistribution of the balance of power reduced the roles of a number of political actors and traditional media, in exchange for expanding the powers of the presidency. She pointed out that state institutions, including the security and military services, maintain their presence within the power structure without direct involvement in economic activity, while continuing to adopt an approach described as cautious in managing major files.

In the same context, the report pointed to environmental and climate challenges facing the country, especially with regard to managing periods of drought and floods, amid calls to enhance proactive planning and infrastructure related to storing water resources.

The magazine concluded by pointing out the continuing social challenges, with groups of young people looking forward to broader job opportunities inside or outside the country, in exchange for calls to renew the elites and strengthen initiatives capable of creating a new dynamism in the Tunisian scene.

The circulating readings remain part of a broader discussion about the path of reform in Tunisia, awaiting what the next stage may bring in terms of political and economic developments.
