Local medical sources reported that the head of the Democratic Movement Renewal Party, Yacoub Ould Ahmed Lamrabet, was transferred to the hospital after suffering severe suffocation as a result of inhaling tear gas. The sources explained that his condition witnessed a gradual improvement, but he is still subject to medical observation and receiving respiratory support.
The party had called for organizing the march to protest the recent increases approved by the government, which included an increase in fuel prices by between 10 and 15 percent, in addition to a noticeable increase in the price of home cooking gas by more than 60 percent, according to circulated data.
On the other hand, party leaders and activists criticized the intervention of the security forces, speaking about the extensive use of tear gas and preventing protesters from reaching the assembly point. Identical statements also indicated that various injuries were recorded and dozens were arrested, before a number of them were later released, according to what media sources reported.
For their part, the authorities justified their intervention by saying that the march was “unlicensed,” stressing their keenness to respect the legal controls regulating gatherings. The government also defended the increase decisions, considering that they are part of measures to confront the repercussions of rising global energy prices and reduce the cost of subsidies.
In the same context, government officials announced a parallel package of measures to rationalize energy consumption, including restricting vehicle movement during the night hours, in a step described as “compulsory” to keep pace with the current economic challenges.
