Disciplinary decisions by “CAF” spark widespread controversy in Morocco and open the door to resorting to the “Tas” court

The decisions issued by the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football sparkedConfederation of African FootballA wave of controversy within Moroccan sports circles, following its announcement of the imposition of financial and disciplinary sanctions on the Moroccan and Senegalese national teams, against the backdrop of the events that accompanied the final of the African Cup of Nations, which Morocco hosted.

The angry reactions came after the committee rejected the official protest submitted byRoyal Moroccan Football UniversityThis is what observers considered a decision that raises questions about the standards for dealing with the incidents that took place in the match, especially in light of talk about the Senegalese national team’s players threatening to withdraw from the field, without issuing penalties that were described as deterrent in this regard.

In this context, journalist and sports analyst Adel Rahmouni expressed his dissatisfaction with the decisions taken, considering that, in his opinion, they included clear contradictions and a disregard for documented data. He explained that tightening the penalties on the Moroccan side, in exchange for rejecting the protest without detailed legal justification, would affect the image of an apparatus that is supposed to adhere to neutrality and fairness.

Al-Rahmouni also announced his support for the university’s move towards taking the legal path throughInternational Sports CourtConsidering that resorting to this body remains, in his view, a legitimate option to defend the rights of national football within the framework of applicable laws.

For his part, sports expert and analyst Issam Al-Idrissi considered that the issued decisions deepened the feeling of unbalanced treatment, noting that the legal objection submitted by the university was met, according to his estimation, with additional penalties instead of legal treatment of the facts raised. Al-Idrissi called for the decision to be appealed before the competent bodies, in addition to strengthening the role of sports media in conveying the Moroccan point of view to international public opinion.

Followers of African football affairs believe that failure to take strict measures regarding the threat to withdraw from the match may send unsafe messages that would affect the spirit of competition and respect for the laws within continental competitions.

Pending the next steps to be announced by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, the file of the final of the African Cup of Nations (Morocco 2025) remains open to further discussion, amid increasing calls to hold the African Union accountable regarding decision-making mechanisms and standards of justice within its competitions.
