Rosso –The regional hospital in the city of Rosso, the capital of Trarza State in Mauritania, is facing an escalating professional crisis after nurses, midwives and specialist doctors demanded the payment of late financial dues, which led to the threat of an open strike before part of it was temporarily suspended following official promises to settle.
Nurses and midwives demanded the release of late night shift benefits for more than 7 months, a pension allowance that exceeded 9 months, in addition to an incentive bonus that had not been paid for more than 6 months, threatening to go on an open strike in the event of no response before Monday.
Those concerned confirmed, in a letter addressed to the hospital administration, that any potential strike would include various interests, calling for accelerating the handling of the file to avoid its impact on the functioning of health services.
In a parallel development, specialist doctors announced the suspension of an open strike that they had begun at the beginning of the week for ten days, starting Tuesday, after receiving official pledges from the Ministry of Health and the administrative authorities of the state of Trarza.
The pledges, according to the union’s data, include settling outstanding financial dues, improving working conditions, and providing the necessary medical supplies and equipment, in addition to raising the quality of patient care.
The union explained that the decision to suspend the strike aims to provide an opportunity to implement commitments, while reserving the right to take escalatory steps in the event of non-respect of commitments, at a time when specialists had gone on strike due to lack of equipment, delayed payments, and the absence of some basic medicines for urgent cases
