Morocco thwarts a terrorist plot linked to ISIS and arrests 10 suspects

Rabat –On Monday morning, the Central Office for Judicial Research foiled a terrorist plot that it described as “extremely dangerous” that was in the advanced stages of preparation, and resulted in the arrest of 10 people suspected of being linked to the ISIS branch in the Sahel region, during simultaneous security operations that included several cities, including the Hajeb region.

The office explained, in an official statement, that the operation was carried out based on accurate intelligence information provided by the General Directorate of National Territorial Surveillance, and targeted a cell suspected of planning to carry out terrorist acts targeting the security of people, property, and public order, with logistical support and coordination with the ISIS branch in the Sahel region.

The security interventions included the cities of Agadir, Taroudant, Casablanca, El Hajeb, Tetouan, Fkih Ben Saleh, and Safi, and resulted in the arrest of 10 suspects, including a minor and a former detainee under the anti-terrorism law.

The searches resulted in the seizure of white weapons, military uniforms, and manuscripts containing explanations for making explosive devices, in addition to digital documents and recordings that included pledges of allegiance to ISIS and threats to carry out terrorist acts inside Morocco.

In a remarkable development, security services found inside a warehouse in the city of Inezgane a four-wheel-drive vehicle that had been modified to operate with butane gas, and was suspected of being prepared for use in a suicide bombing or ramming attack targeting sensitive facilities and targets.

The security teams inside the warehouse also seized gas bottles, pressure cookers equipped with nails and electrical wires, a welding machine, and various chemicals. The place was subjected to strict security measures, which included the evacuation of neighboring residents and the use of a team specialized in explosives to examine the seizures.

According to the results of preliminary investigations, the cell members pledged allegiance to the leader of ISIS, and received direct instructions from the organization’s leaders in the Sahel region to carry out terrorist operations inside Morocco, while postponing their plan to join the organization’s strongholds outside the country.

The communication indicated that the judicial investigation, which is being conducted under the supervision of the Public Prosecution in charge of terrorism cases, is continuing to identify all possible extensions of this cell, and to reveal its national and international connections.
