Algeria –The arrest of an Algerian citizen after posting posts on social media questioning the quality of red watermelon, known locally as “dallah,” sparked a wave of controversy, after posts warning against consuming a food product turned into a security issue that ended with the intervention of the Anti-Cybercrime Squad.
The person concerned had called on citizens to boycott the “dahler”, claiming that it was “adulterated” and “irrigated with polluted water”, without providing evidence, scientific reports, or official data proving the validity of these allegations. On the other hand, the authorities have not yet issued detailed clarifications regarding the legal basis for the arrest or the nature of the charges against him.
This incident brought back to the forefront questions about the limits of dealing with content published on social media platforms, especially when it comes to opinions or warnings affecting consumer products or economic sectors, as observers believe that confronting undocumented information should be done mainly through official communication and the provision of scientific evidence, instead of turning it into files of a security nature.
The case also highlighted the importance of enhancing consumer confidence in regulatory institutions, by publishing the results of monitoring and laboratory analyzes on a regular basis, which allows refuting rumors with documented information, and limits the spread of unconfirmed news that finds a fertile environment on social media sites.
In light of the repeated controversy over the quality of some food products, specialists confirm that protecting public health requires, on the one hand, holding accountable anyone who deliberately spreads misleading information that causes panic without scientific support, and on the other hand, ensuring the right of citizens to obtain official and transparent information about the safety of products traded in the markets, in a way that achieves a balance between combating fake news and preserving freedom of expression.
