Algeria –With the advent of summer, Algeria is witnessing an increase in reports of the disappearance of minors, in light of the spread of distress calls posted by families on social media sites to search for their children, especially teenagers and girls under the age of sixteen, amid warnings of the social and security risks associated with this phenomenon.
Sociology specialists believe that the recurrence of disappearances of minors is not only related to the summer vacation, but rather reflects family and psychological problems that push some children and teenagers to leave their homes in search of a different reality, while in some cases social media platforms turn into a means used by networks to lure and ensnare vulnerable groups through misleading promises.
Human rights activists confirm that minors who leave their family environment become more vulnerable to multiple risks, including violence, exploitation, human trafficking, or sexual and criminal exploitation, stressing that confronting this phenomenon requires addressing its social and psychological causes, in addition to strengthening prevention and protection mechanisms.
Specialists point out that reducing these cases is not limited to tightening control over the digital space, but also requires strengthening dialogue within the family, spreading a culture of safe use of the Internet, and providing sports, cultural, and entertainment spaces that accommodate children and youth during the summer vacation, especially in areas that suffer from poor services.
In this context, some civil institutions and associations, including the “Nada” network for defending children’s rights, continue to implement programs aimed at integrating minors from vulnerable backgrounds into vocational training paths, in coordination with official bodies, in order to enhance their social integration and reduce factors of fragility.
Despite these initiatives, observers believe that current efforts are still insufficient to confront the expansion of the phenomenon, in light of the continued recording of cases of disappearance of minors during each summer season, which requires strengthening coordination between the family and the specialized institutions to protect children and prevent the dangers that threaten them.
