After months of tension, France returns its ambassador to Algeria and resumes the deportation of irregular migrants

Paris –French-Algerian relations are witnessing new moves towards calm after months of political and diplomatic tension, following Paris’ announcement of the return of its ambassador to Algeria and the resumption of deportations of Algerian immigrants who are in an illegal situation on French soil.

This development comes after a severe crisis that erupted between the two countries since the summer of 2024, against the backdrop of France’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara, a decision that caused an unprecedented escalation between Paris and Algeria, which was reflected in the level of political, consular and security cooperation between the two sides.

In this context, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed, on Thursday, the resumption of deportations of Algerians residing illegally in France, noting that more than 140 deportations have been carried out since the beginning of 2026.

The French official explained that consular cooperation with Algeria gradually returned after his last visit to Algeria in mid-February, as the Algerian authorities once again began issuing consular permits that allow repatriation operations to be carried out, after they had been halted during the height of the diplomatic crisis.

Nunez added that Paris had obtained about 120 transit permits since the resumption of communication, considering that things were “back in motion again,” stressing at the same time that the French government was seeking to expand deportations, including organizing group trips for irregular migrants.

The French Minister of the Interior revealed that Algerians represent between 30 and 40 percent of the total number of detainees in administrative detention centers in France, amounting to more than 700 people out of about two thousand places available in these centers.

In a parallel step, the French presidency announced, today, Friday, the return of the French ambassador to Algeria, Stephane Romatet, to his official duties, more than a year after he was summoned to Paris due to the political crisis between the two countries.

The Elysee Palace explained that the ambassador will accompany the Minister Delegate in charge of the Armed Forces, Alice Ruffaut, during her official visit to Algeria, before resuming his full diplomatic activity.

The French presidency confirmed that this step comes under the direction of French President Emmanuel Macron, as part of an attempt to “restore an effective dialogue” with Algeria, despite the continuing contentious issues between the two parties.

Paris also indicated that the French ambassador would give priority to the file of French journalist Christophe Glez, who has been detained in Algeria since 2024 in connection with a case related to “praising terrorism,” according to the Algerian authorities.

Observers believe that the recent moves reflect a mutual attempt to reduce political tension between Paris and Algeria, in light of increasing pressure related to immigration issues, security cooperation, and the Moroccan Sahara issue.
