After an escalation in cases of sexual violence, Tunisia is moving towards preparing the first national protocol to protect victims

Tunisia –On June 18 and 19, 2026, the Tunisian capital will host an international symposium aimed at laying the first foundations for preparing the first national protocol for forensic and psychological care for victims of sexual violence, at the initiative of the Medical Forensic Unit at Charles Nicole University Hospital, under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and in partnership with the “Sila” project.

This symposium, which will be held in a hostel in the capital, aims to unify medical, forensic and psychological practices related to caring for victims of sexual violence, in line with international standards, in a step considered the first of its kind at the national level.

It is expected that the Minister of Health will supervise the opening of the meeting, in the presence of the ambassadors of the European Union, Belgium and Spain in Tunisia, along with experts, national and international officials and representatives of institutions concerned with the fields of health, justice and human rights.

Specialists from Tunisia and several countries, including Belgium, Spain, France, Morocco and Switzerland, will participate in this symposium, in addition to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Al-Salem, who will provide an intervention on international challenges and mechanisms for protecting victims.

This date comes with the support of the “Sila” project funded by the European Union, within the framework of the program to support social inclusion, which is implemented by the Belgian Agency for International Cooperation and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development, in partnership with Tunisian public institutions and civil society organizations.

The project focuses on strengthening the prevention of gender-based violence and improving mechanisms for caring for victims, through a human rights-based approach and coordination between the health, judicial and social sectors.
