New York– American politics has come closer to Palestinian originsAbeer QawwasFrom entering the New York State Senate, after achieving a remarkable victory in the Democratic Party primary elections, obtaining about 60 percent of the votes.
This victory places Qawas on the cusp of achieving an unprecedented achievement, as she is the first Palestinian Muslim woman close to representing her state in the Senate, after an election campaign that received broad support from the progressive movement within the Democratic Party, and from New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani.
Abeer Qawwas was born in New York to a Palestinian family that immigrated from Palestine in 1948 to Jordan, before later immigrating to the United States. She says that the experiences her family lived through, including her father’s deportation from the United States after he was detained by immigration authorities, constituted one of the most prominent motivations behind her entering the political arena.
During her election campaign, Qawwas focused on immigration issues and the high cost of living. She also adopted positions in support of stopping the war in Gaza and criticized the continued American support for Israeli military operations.

Despite being subjected to criticism campaigns and media attacks from pro-Israel right-wing parties, it was able to achieve remarkable electoral progress, benefiting from the growing influence of the progressive movement within the Democratic Party and the increasing presence of candidates from immigrant backgrounds and religious and ethnic minorities.
Qawwas emphasized that her goal is not limited to representing Palestinians or Muslims only, but rather to convey the voice of marginalized communities and defend issues of social justice and economic reform within decision-making institutions in New York State.
This victory comes at a time when a number of pro-Israel Democratic politicians are facing increasing pressure within the party, with growing voices calling for a review of American policies towards the war in Gaza and Middle East issues.
