The organization quoted one of the survivors as saying that she had lost her husband in the accident, while the other confirmed that she had lost her two infants, in one of the most painful stories that accompanied this human tragedy.

The International Organization for Migration expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of lives in this fatal accident, stressing that its teams provided emergency medical care to the two survivors immediately after they were landed on land, in coordination with the competent authorities.

According to the testimonies of the two survivors, the boat, which was carrying migrants and refugees of different African nationalities, set off from the city of Zawiya in Libya at around eleven o’clock at night on February 5, before it capsized after about six hours of sailing as a result of water seeping into it.

The organization’s data show that the month of January alone witnessed the reporting of the death or loss of at least 375 migrants in the central Mediterranean, as a result of drowning incidents described as “invisible,” which occurred in difficult weather conditions, with hundreds of other cases likely to have been recorded that were not monitored.

Data highlightedMissing Migrants ProjectAccording to the International Organization for Migration’s report, more than 1,300 migrants were lost in the central Mediterranean during the year 2025, while the latest incident raised the death toll reported on this dangerous route during the year 2026 to no less than 484 people.

The organization warned of the continued activity of human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks, which exploit the conditions of migrants to make profits by organizing risky journeys on unseaworthy boats, exposing people to serious violations and increased risks.

At the conclusion of its statement, the International Organization for Migration called for strengthening international cooperation and adopting approaches that place the protection of lives at the heart of responses, while emphasizing the need to provide safe and regular paths for migration, as an essential step to reduce recurring tragedies and save more lives.
