My press – Algeria
Diplomatic tension escalated betweenAlgeriaAndFranceAfter the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the summoning of the Chargé d’Affaires of the French Embassy in Algeria, against the backdrop of a judicial decision extending the temporary detention of an Algerian consular employee for an additional year.
According to official data, Algeria expressed its rejection of this decision, considering that the person concerned has been in detention since April 2025 despite having a special legal status that guarantees him protection under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, which raised reservations from the Algerian side.
The Algerian authorities also informed the French diplomat of their dissatisfaction with the conditions of detention of the consular employee, noting that the consular visit that took place on March 17 revealed data that was considered inappropriate, without providing additional details about their nature.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that this development may affect the normal course of bilateral relations, indicating that it may reflect on the existing cooperation between the two countries in several fields.
This development comes in the context of relations that have been experiencing fluctuations in recent months, despite previous indications of relative calm, following the visit of French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez to Algeria last February, which had opened the door to expectations of a partial detente, before indicators of tension returned to the fore again.
