Washington –The initial agreement announced by US President Donald Trump with Iran to stop hostilities and open a new negotiating path raised a wave of questions and criticism within the US Congress, due to the absence of the official text of the agreement and the failure to reveal its details so far.
The announcement, which was presented by the US administration as a step towards reducing tension in the Middle East, became the focus of a political and legal debate in Washington, after a number of members of Congress, from both the Republican and Democratic parties, confirmed that they had not been informed of the content of the agreement or its basic provisions.
American media reports reported that a number of lawmakers called on the administration to reveal the official document, considering that evaluating or supporting the agreement remains difficult in light of the absence of details related to implementation mechanisms and mutual commitments between the two sides.
The controversy is focused in particular on sensitive issues that include the Iranian nuclear program, the future of the economic sanctions imposed on Tehran, in addition to the status of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which are issues that were not clearly addressed within the announced agreement.
According to circulating data, the agreement is divided into a temporary truce for a period of 60 days, followed by negotiations aimed at reaching a broader and more sustainable settlement, but the details of the next stage are still unannounced.
The issue also raised demands within Congress for an official briefing on the content of the agreement, with some representatives confirming that any understandings related to the Iranian nuclear file require specific legal and regulatory procedures.
The current controversy reflects the magnitude of the challenges facing the American administration in marketing the agreement internally, especially in light of the continuing ambiguity regarding the strategic files related to regional security, the Iranian nuclear program, and economic sanctions.
