US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, categorically denied the existence of any plan to forcibly deport residents of the Gaza Strip to Libya, stressing that what is being circulated in this regard is “untrue.” He explained, during a session in the Senate devoted to discussing the State Department’s budget for the year 2026, that the United States did not discuss any arrangements related to the resettlement of Palestinians, but rather the matter was limited to “voluntary departure” for those who wished to do so.
Rubio indicated that population movements inside Gaza are classified as temporary measures to alleviate suffering, denying the existence of any permanent resettlement project outside the Strip, or any contacts that took place with Libya in this regard.
These statements come in light of the continuation of the Israeli aggression against Gaza since October 7, 2023, which resulted in more than 175,000 martyrs and wounded, in addition to thousands of missing persons and mass displacement, amid continued disregard for the decisions of the International Court of Justice, and with American political cover.
Talks between Moscow and Washington regarding Ukraine
In a separate context, Rubio revealed American expectations that Russia would provide new conditions for a ceasefire in Ukraine, in preparation for broader negotiations, at a time when US President Donald Trump confirmed his commitment to ending the war. Trump had held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the results of which he informed European leaders and Ukrainian President Zelensky, following negotiations in Istanbul that resulted in an agreement to exchange two thousand prisoners.
Progress in the Iranian nuclear file
Regarding the Iranian file, Rubio confirmed that the nuclear talks with Tehran are witnessing “tangible progress,” with the continuation of indirect negotiations in Muscat and Rome, after a letter Trump sent to Iranian Leader Ali Khamenei. He explained that Washington is offering an economic agreement in exchange for Iran’s withdrawal from uranium enrichment, stressing that Tehran’s possession of this capability is a “red line.”
Rubio stressed that the sanctions imposed on Iran will remain in effect until a comprehensive agreement is reached, noting that the fourth round of negotiations, which concluded in Muscat, was “the most difficult and most serious,” according to the Iranian side’s description.
