Tunisia –The General Administration of Veterinary Services called on poultry breeders to adhere to preventive measures to limit the effects of the ongoing heat wave and frequent power outages, in order to preserve the health of the flocks and ensure continuity of production.
In an awareness statement, the administration stressed the importance of providing good ventilation inside the barns and maintaining appropriate cooling levels, while ensuring that the poultry is provided with clean, cold drinking water on a permanent basis, in addition to cleaning the drinking bowls and constantly monitoring the water pressure.
It also recommended preparing for any potential power outage by testing backup generators on a daily basis, ensuring the availability of sufficient fuel and the readiness of automation systems to ensure rapid intervention when needed.
With regard to nutrition, veterinary departments stressed the necessity of providing feed during the coolest periods of the day, avoiding distributing it during peak hours, and monitoring birds’ feed consumption on a daily basis to monitor any changes that may affect production.
The administration called for strengthening biosecurity measures inside the estates, by limiting unnecessary visits, adhering to periodic disinfection operations, and properly disposing of dead birds, in addition to combating rodents and insects.
It also stressed the need to constantly monitor the flock and pay attention to signs of heat stress, such as intense panting, birds gathering near ventilation sources, decreased water or feed consumption, or high mortality rates and decreased production, with immediate communication with the veterinarian when any abnormal symptoms appear.
In order to prevent heat stress, the administration recommended not to carry out poultry vaccination, transport, sorting and assembly operations, or carry out any non-urgent interventions inside the wards, during the period between 10 am and 5 pm, when temperatures reach their peak.
