Yesterday, Monday, April 13, 2026, the city of Blida, located about 50 kilometers from the capital, Algiers, witnessed a double attempt to carry out two suicide attacks targeting sensitive sites, coinciding with the official visit of Pope Leo XIV to the country, according to identical data.
According to available information, the security forces were able to intervene quickly to neutralize the attackers, who were carrying explosive belts, before they reached their goals, which led to an early explosion of the explosive devices, and injuries of varying severity were recorded in an initial toll.
Local sources reported that the two attacks targeted the central police headquarters and a sports complex on Mohamed Boudiaf Street, at a time when the country was experiencing the atmosphere of a historic visit by the Pope, the first of its kind to Algeria.
This incident is the first of its kind in Algeria since 2012, which highlights the security challenges associated with such events, especially in light of the organization of official visits of an international nature.
Despite this security development, data indicate that the visit program of Pope Leo XIV, which includes religious and official stations, including travel to the city of Annaba, is still continuing according to the announced schedule.
This incident comes in the context of a visit with religious and diplomatic dimensions, aimed at promoting interfaith dialogue and calling for peace, amid an international situation characterized by increasing tensions.
