Al-Mutlawi –On Monday evening, the emergency department of the regional hospital in the city of Metlaoui, in Gafsa Province, southern Tunisia, received 25 people who showed symptoms of food poisoning after eating meals from a fast food store, while the health authorities began an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.
The regional coordinator of the National Authority for Health Safety of Food Products in Gafsa, Omar Al-Obaidi, confirmed that all of the infected people ate “fricassee” meals from the same store, which prompted the competent authorities to consider this possibility among the main hypotheses of the investigation, without official confirmation until the results of laboratory tests are issued.
Immediately upon receiving notification from the hospital administration, the National Authority for Health Safety of Food Products sent a team to the site, where samples of food were collected to be subjected to laboratory tests, in parallel with the opening of an investigation to determine the exact causes of the poisoning cases.
The authorities took a decision to temporarily close the store in question as a precautionary measure, until the investigations are completed and the results of the tests that will officially determine the source of the poisoning appear.
This incident comes at a time when the Tunisian authorities are stressing the intensification of monitoring food preparation and sale shops, in order to preserve the health safety of consumers.
