Tunisia –The Tunisian authorities announced their intention to strengthen the voluntary return program for irregular migrants during the year 2026, with the goal of reaching about 10,000 supported returns before the end of the year, as part of efforts to regulate flowsImmigrationReducing irregular migration.
According to available data, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Al-Nafti, explained, during a hearing before the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of People’s Representatives, that the program has recorded 1,262 cases of voluntary return of migrants to their countries of origin since the beginning of this year.

The Minister revealed that the pace of voluntary returns has witnessed an increase in recent years, as 7,250 return cases were recorded during the year 2024, before the number rose to 8,853 cases in 2025, which reflects the expansion of support mechanisms directed to migrants wishing to return to their countries.
He also confirmed thatTunisian governmentIt intends to continue cooperation with international partners and donor countries in order to finance return and reintegration programs in countries of origin, with the aim of reducing the risks of irregular migration and reducing attempts at illegal crossing towards or through Tunisia.
This approach comes within a broader strategy adopted by Tunisia to manage the migration file, a file that formed a major axis in the discussions conducted by the Tunisian authorities with a number of European partners during the last period.
