Tunisia calls for reformulating its partnership with the European Union on more balanced foundations

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Al-Nafti, renewed his country’s call to review the partnership framework with the European Union, in a way that ensures achieving greater balance and fairness in bilateral relations, in light of the accelerating challenges taking place in the region.

This position came during a phone call on Friday withEuropean CommissionIn charge of Mediterranean Affairs, Debarvka Soica, who offered official congratulations to Tunisia on the occasion of its celebration of the seventieth anniversary of independence, according to what the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in an official communiqué.

During this communication, the Tunisian official stressed his country’s adherence to the option of dialogue with various international partners, led by the European Union, considering that any successful partnership should be based on the foundations of mutual respect, solidarity and shared responsibility, in addition to the principle of equality in dealing.

He also called for adopting a new approach and more flexible and innovative cooperation mechanisms that take into account the mutual interests of both parties, and at the same time respond to various challenges with security, economic, social and technological dimensions.

The two sides touched on the reality of existing cooperation betweenTunisiaAnd the European Union, especially after more than thirty years of the partnership agreement, stressing the importance of developing this cooperation and expanding it to include multiple areas of common interest.

And regardingImmigration fileThe Tunisian minister stressed that his country is adopting a comprehensive approach that takes into account human rights and the dignity of migrants, with a focus on addressing the deep causes of this phenomenon, reiterating Tunisia’s refusal to be a space for settlement or transit. He also stressed the need to support voluntary return programs for migrants coming from sub-Saharan African countries, as a solution that preserves their dignity.

For her part, the European Commissioner expressed the European Union’s keenness to strengthen its relations with Tunisia and consider it a key partner in the region, while affirming its readiness to continue developing joint cooperation in various fields.
