The Ministry of Defense in the Libyan National Unity Government announced, on Tuesday morning, the end of the military operation in the capital, Tripoli, confirming its full control over the Abu Salim area, following violent clashes that took place in the city on Monday night, during which heavy weapons were used.
The ministry said in a statement published on its official Facebook page that it had issued instructions to continue implementing its security plan in the region “to ensure the consolidation of stability and the extension of state authority,” while the Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, described the operation as “a major achievement on the path to restoring security in the capital.”
The confrontations that broke out between rival armed formations in southern Tripoli resulted in the killing of at least six people, according to what was reported by the Field Medicine Center of the Tripoli government, which confirmed that the recovery of bodies had begun from the vicinity of the Abu Salim area, one of the most tense points during the confrontations.
The Libyan Ministry of Defense confirmed that its forces had tightened control over the Abu Salim area, which is considered a stronghold of Ghanwa al-Kakli, head of the “Stabilization Support Apparatus” affiliated with the Presidential Council, whose recent assassination sparked a wave of tension that ended in bloody clashes.
The Libyan authorities issued an appeal to the residents of the capital, urging them to remain in their homes for their safety, in light of the continuing tension in some southern neighborhoods of Tripoli, despite the announcement of the end of military operations.
This escalation comes amid repeated calls from the United Nations and the international community to exercise restraint and stop the fighting, in a country that has been suffering from security and political fragility for more than a decade.
