On Friday, the United Nations expressed its concern about the violence that accompanied student protests and the closure of a number of secondary schools in France, amid reports that thousands of protesters were arrested and a number of them were injured.
Shabia Manto, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the Office is following with concern the developments of these protests, calling on all parties to maintain peaceful movements and avoid disproportionate use of force by law enforcement forces.
The UN official stressed the need to respect the right to peaceful assembly, in a position that highlights the importance of protecting basic freedoms while dealing with protests, and ensuring that student movements do not turn into violent confrontations.
