The Tunisian Ministry of Defense confirms the neutrality of the army after a political controversy sparked by statements by Marzouki

Tunisia –The Tunisian Ministry of Defense issued a statement affirming the military establishment’s adherence to neutrality and adherence to the state’s laws, following a controversy sparked by statements by former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki regarding the role of the army at the current stage.

The ministry said, in a statement published on Thursday, that the Tunisian army is a “republican institution based on discipline,” undertaking the tasks of defending the homeland and the unity of its territory, with full commitment to neutrality and respect for military laws and arrangements.

The ministry added that the statement comes in the context of what it described as “repeated attempts to involve the military institution and its leaders in disputes and outbids,” in addition to questioning its independence and impartiality.

The Ministry of Defense did not directly specify the intended destination, but the statement comes days after statements made by former President Moncef Marzouki, in which he called on the army to play what he considered “a historic role in protecting the state’s sovereignty and dignity.”

Marzouki had spoken, in a video speech he published on his official Facebook page, about what he described as possible scenarios for the future of the political situation in Tunisia, including President Kais Saied continuing in power through “fraudulent elections,” as he put it.

He also indicated the possibility of the return of broad popular movements to restore the democratic path, as he described it, without an immediate official comment from the Tunisian authorities regarding these statements.

This interaction comes in light of the continuing political controversy taking place in Tunisia since President Kais Saied announced, in July 2021, freezing the work of Parliament and taking exceptional measures that sparked a wide division within the political arena.

The Tunisian army is historically known for its distance from political disputes, despite criticism directed at the military institution by opposition parties due to its lack of intervention during the political transformations that the country has witnessed in recent years.
