Algeria –The US Embassy in Algeria announced the opening of the sub-office of the Legal Attaché of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in a step that reflects the increasing level of security cooperation between the two countries, months after the signing of a memorandum of understanding for military cooperation between Algeria and Washington.
The opening of the office comes in the context of the growing security partnership between the two sides, especially in the areas of combating terrorism and cross-border organized crime, in addition to enhancing the exchange of information and expertise between security and judicial institutions.
Security specialists believe that this step reflects the transition of Algerian-American relations to a more advanced stage, especially in light of the security challenges witnessed in the Sahel region of Africa, and the greater coordination it imposes in the files of combating terrorism and cross-border crimes.
Security expert Ahmed Mezab explained that the opening of the FBI sub-office represents a new mechanism for developing institutional cooperation between the two countries, through exchanging experiences and enhancing coordination in confronting organized crime and terrorist financing, in addition to supporting criminal investigation capabilities.
He pointed out that security relations between Algeria and the United States have witnessed increasing momentum since the signing of the military memorandum of understanding on January 22, 2025 between the Algerian Ministry of Defense and the US Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM), which included the areas of training, operational coordination, information exchange, equipment, search and rescue operations, as well as cooperation in combating terrorism in the Sahel region.
In the same context, the US Embassy revealed the organization of joint training programs within the framework of the International Criminal Investigation Training Assistance Program of the US Department of Justice, in partnership with the Algerian Ministry of Justice, the General Directorate of National Security, the National Gendarmerie, the Financial Inquiry Processing Cell, and the Bank of Algeria.
These programs included specialized workshops on investigation techniques for money laundering and terrorist financing crimes related to cryptocurrencies, with the participation of judges, prosecutors, investigators and experts from the security and judicial sectors, within the framework of strengthening judicial and security cooperation between the two countries.
This development comes at a time when Algerian-American relations are witnessing an expansion in the areas of security and military cooperation, amid growing interest in the stability of the Sahel region and confronting cross-border security threats.
