Tunisia –The phrase “the flood has reached its peak,” which was used by Tunisian President Kais Saied during a field visit to the state of Nabeul, sparked a wide wave of interaction and controversy on social media platforms, after it turned in recent days into a protest slogan used to criticize the political and economic conditions in the country.
These developments came after a political message was circulated through an application belonging to the “Tunisie Telecom” company, which included criticism of living conditions and public freedoms, which prompted the company to announce that its platform had been subjected to a cyber attack, stressing that its services and user data were not affected.
In a related context, a number of activists and artists repurposed the phrase “the flood has reached the peak” in digital content and protest songs that spread widely, including messages related to the high cost of living, unemployment, and declining purchasing power.
This interaction comes in light of an ongoing debate taking place in Tunisia about the economic and social conditions, especially with the rising costs of living and the increasing daily pressures on Tunisian families.
These developments also revived the discussion about the growth of digital protest and the use of electronic platforms as a space for political expression, at a time when the country is witnessing continuous tensions between the authority and the opposition since the exceptional measures announced by President Kais Saied in 2021.
Observers believe that the rapid transformation of a presidential phrase into a material for digital protest reflects the amount of interaction that social platforms have created in the political and media scene in Tunisia.
