The strike of secondary education teachers in Tunisia expanded on Tuesday to include six states in the center of the country, as part of a union movement demanding the opening of negotiations with the Ministry of Education regarding increasing wages and activating previous agreements.
The General University of Secondary Education, affiliated with the Tunisian General Labor Union, announced the implementation of a general strike against teaching in the states of Kasserine, Sidi Bouzid, Kairouan, Sousse, Monastir and Mahdia, after the movement included, on Monday, 11 states in the north of the country.
University member Noureddine Royce said that the participation rate in the central states exceeded 60 percent, considering that the turnout exceeded expectations, and stressing that professors held meetings within educational institutions to evaluate the course of movements and determine the next steps.
For his part, the Secretary General of the General University of Secondary Education, Muhammad Al-Safi, explained that the strike comes in protest against what he considered “the closing of the door to negotiation” by the Ministry of Education, in addition to demanding the implementation of what was stated in the agreements of February 9, 2019 and May 23, 2023, which stipulate gradual increases in teachers’ wages of up to 300 dinars over a period of three years.
On the other hand, the Minister of Education, Nour al-Din al-Nouri, had stated before the House of Representatives, during the discussion of the ministry’s budget last November, that the issue of increasing teachers’ wages was still under study, without announcing specific executive measures.
This move comes within a protest schedule announced by the union earlier, which includes implementing the strike in three stages: in the north on February 16, the center on February 17, and the south on February 18.
According to official data issued by the Ministry of Education, the number of students in the middle and secondary levels is more than 1.1 million students distributed among 1,568 educational institutions, while the number of teachers is approximately 69,000, which reflects the magnitude of the potential impact of this strike on the normal conduct of lessons.
