Algeria –The Algerian Supreme Court opened the door to the possibility of French journalist Christophe Glez benefiting from a presidential pardon, after it rejected the cassation appeal submitted by the Public Prosecution in the case he has been pursuing for more than a year.
Defense lawyers, Amirosh Bakuri and Emmanuel Daoud, announced on Wednesday that the Supreme Court issued a final decision on May 25, according to which it ruled to take note of Christophe Glez’s withdrawal from his cassation appeal, while rejecting the appeal submitted by the Public Prosecution, which means that all stages of litigation in the file have been exhausted.
The French sports journalist was arrested in May 2024 in the Kabylie region in northeastern Algeria while preparing a press report on the JS Kabylie Club, before an Algerian court issued a seven-year prison sentence against him in June 2025 on charges of “praising terrorism,” a ruling that was upheld on appeal in December of the same year.
According to the defense team, the end of the judicial procedures makes the future of the case currently linked to the discretionary powers of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who can issue a presidential pardon against the French journalist.
The two lawyers confirmed that they look forward to granting their client a presidential pardon as soon as possible, allowing this file to be closed and the suffering he has been experiencing with his family to end since his arrest.
For its part, Reporters Without Borders considered that the Supreme Court’s decision constitutes an important step towards the possibility of releasing Christophe Glez, noting that a presidential pardon has become the only path available after all levels of litigation have been exhausted.
This development comes days before the start of the 2026 World Cup finals scheduled in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as the parties supporting the French journalist renewed their calls to enable him to regain his freedom and return to practicing his professional work.
